Saw this in a 2015+ WRX/STI forum this morning so I’ve decided to write about it. Apparently a 17 year old has been though two 2015 Subaru STI’s already, wrecking both. The story is a 17 year old threatened to harm himself if his grandfather didn’t buy him a Subaru STI. So his rich grandfather bought him his first STI. Being a stupid teenager he tried to drift the AWD car and the back “slid out” hitting some kind of concrete barrier. Being an innocent teenager his grandfather bought him a second brand new STI, and you guessed it! This time while trying to drift (again) he slammed into a concrete barrier, wrecking the car (Pictured Above).

My point is many teenagers and young adults aren’t responsible nowadays. People seem to take better care of thing they actually worked for, not things they were given. In this case he was given a car(S), probably didn’t pay for his own insurance and ended up wrecking both being a stupid spoiled teenager. Will his grandfather buy him another new STI or has the grandfather learned his lesson?

Hopefully the third one causes him to slide into a raging river...or a cop car.

“My point is a lot of teenagers and young adults aren’t responsible nowadays.”

Ah yes, the hasty generalization game. I’m going to go ahead and say that many people in general aren’t super responsible. Hell, scroll further down on Oppo right now, and you see Mazda308 worried that his aunt is going to total a new to her Corolla due to her irresponsibility , and I’m guessing she’s not a teen or young adult.

As to you saying that people take better care of things they worked for rather than what they’re given, that can be argued too. Once again, if we’re using anecdotes as evidence, my dad bought my mum a Mustang for her birthday fifteen years ago, and it’s still in great shape.

Anyway, my point is: yeah, the kid fucked up two cars given to him, but that’s hardly enough to call it a trend on all teenagers and young adults.

Dear parents,

Thank you for buying me a Kia Forte, so I couldn’t try to kill myself like this even if I was that stupid. (I gave the Forte back to them once I could afford to buy my own car)

I really don’t have any respect for someone who didn’t buy their first car with their own money. You definitely treat it differently. You get paranoid about every squeak and rattle, desperately weave around potholes, etc.

And what possesses someone to threaten personal injury to manipulate a loved one?

Here’s what the father/grandfather should have said: Skip to 4:19

Homeboi needs to clear those notifications before taking a screenshot.

Although I don’t approve of threatening suicide to get what you want or trying to “drift”, the only feeling I have for this kid is envy. I would have rather been crashing an STi at 17 than puttering around in my shitcan Taurus. STi is safer too.

Wait. Wait. Wait. He threatened suicide to get a car. That has to be the most bullshit thing I've ever heard. No single car is worth that much to me. Yes I understand that it's a nice car but for real.

Are you sure he didn’t threaten to harm himself if he DID buy him an STI? Because he’s been doing exactly that...

One could argue that it wasn’t really the kid’s fault. At 17 the brain isn’t fully developed. What teenagers lack is the full ability to assess risks. Most legal systems even account for that in some way. (Drivers license at 18 in most countries, trials under youth law until 21 etc.....) So the grandpa is to blame as well.

That being said, after the first crash he should have learned his lesson.

It’s up to the parents/guardians to judge whether or not their kid is responsible enough to have a nice car. I got my TA for my 16th birthday, however, I’d always been an honor roll student who didn’t cause problems (with the understanding that if I did do something dumb I’d lose it).

“ A trend on all teenagers and young adults”

I didn’t say “ all ”, I said “ A Lot ”. I agree, some people take care of things they were given. Some do not. I inherited a 1968 Ford Mustang, I didn't work for it. But I sure take great care of it.

“Many teens and young adults aren’t responsible these days”

I'm sorry, what? That's such an over generalization I don't even know what to say. This kid is stupid, sure, but don't let him be representative of an entire generation

I would think if the cops showed up at either of those, he’s well on his way to losing his license (depending on his story, I guess).

When I was a teen, my dad promised to take me to a driving school after I’d gotten my license. He never followed through but I think some sort of race training or defensive driving isn’t a bad idea for most kids. At least then if they want to screw around they’ll know how to not screw it up this bad.

How it was acquired is merely stand-in for how much one wanted it.

Having to buy your first car turns any first car into something you wanted. On the other hand, if your first car was one you grew up lusting over (doesn’t even have to be something fancy or exotic), you will probably treat it with that same level of care and respect as one you bought yourself because, in both cases, you don’t want anything bad to happen to it.

That’s pretty much how I got a Corvette. Do well in school, do your chores, eat your spinach, and manage your “good will” points by not asking and turning down offers for frivolous stuff...and you can get a Corvette instead of a Fiesta/Jetta/Altima.

I cannot imagine teh cost to insure such a young driver with such a high profile car and two write offs to his name!
